Alessandra Ferlini (MD) is specialized in Medical Genetics (University of Ferrara) and Neurology (University of Bologna), and PhD in genetics (Imperial College, London). She is associate professor in medical genetics, director of the Medical Genetics Unit at the University of Ferrara (Italy), honorary visiting professor at University College of London, member of neuromuscular disease research and care networks, as TREAT-NMD Alliance, European NeuroMuscular Centre.
Grants: She acted as coordinator of EU research grants FINGER and BIO-NMD and is Scientific Coordinator of S4C EU-IMI project , she act(s)ed as full partner in EU grants NMD-CHIP, SIGN, Neuromics, SOLVE-RD, BIND. She is also PI of Telethon, AFM, Sarepta therapeutics, PTC Therapeutics, and other Italian grants.
Trials: She is PI in innovative trials for Duchenne muscular dystrophy based on antisense oligonucleotides.
Diagnostics: She is head of the Medical Genetics Unit in Ferrara which is a full-service with many diagnostics tasks (molecular cytogenetics, counselling), providing molecular diagnosis for more than 210 different phenotypes, including 500 disease genes. She is Health Care Provider in the EURO-NMD ERN and ITHACA ERNs ( ern-euro-nmd.eu)
and Chair of the ERN Genetic Task. She is also involved in international, national, and local Ethical Committees.
Research fields: Gene discovery, genomics, nanodelivery of molecules, and omics methods.
She serves as a referee for Scientific international Journals, Funding Agencies, and Research Institutions.
